These points that I am going to talk about occur in most fitness clubs and health clubs around Manchester, including your small local gym. They will increase your knowledge so that you may make more of an informed decision when you are looking for an option for improving your fitness.
Manchester Health Club Secret #1: They hope that you do not use their fitness facility regularly.
There are a couple of main reasons that the centre that you are a member of does not actually want you to turn up. Once they have you signed up (usually for a 12 month contract) they realize that whether you actually bother to go or not does not really matter to them as they still recieve your direct debit regardless. In fact it means less work for them if you do not bother to go as it means less admin, less cleaning and most of all it keeps the gym from getting to be over crowded.Just think, if every single member was using their health club membership and actually going to the gym a couple of times per week then the place would be packed and no equipment would be free to use, so that would mean buying more or putting a hold on any new memberships, but that is not going to happen is it!?
Something more to think about is that if people were getting amazing results from actually completing a couple of training sessions per week then members would be seeing amazing results and would not have a good reason to go back once they have reached their goals (other than maintenance). So, when the membership is up it is often renewed due to their fitness goals still not being reached.
Manchester Health Club Secret #2: Training is not the be all and end all.
Most health clubs and fitness centres focus on selling you the training and the benefits of using their equipment for your workouts. I have never seen any member recieve any valuable information when being toured through the gym, especially when it comes to nutrition. The best training programme in the world should involve a structured training programme and nutrition programme. It is clear that it is only training that is focused on at gyms in Manchester, however around 80% of actual results, especially if your goal is to lose weight, will come from having the correct nutrition. You can not out train a bad eating plan, no matter how much or how hard you train, your results are almost never going to come if you are not eating correctly. This includes eating the right types of foods, the correct quantity, at the right times and at the perfect intervals.
Think about the personal trainers in health clubs and gyms, they obviously go through nutrition with clients (or at least they should be doing) so why should you be any different. Some individuals who work as personal trainers in Manchester offer great nutritional advice to clients on top of their structured training programme, which is widely neglected in health clubs. Basic nutritional information should be available to every member.

Manchester Health Club Secret #3: They count on you not reading the small print.
Let’s face it, nobody reads the small print, including me. Small print is designed in a way so that 99% of people will not actually read it, one of the reasons on why its small. Usually your gym membership will be 12 months and if you want to quit you have to pay up the rest of your contract, similar to mobile phone contracts. Its a simple point but just be careful as you may be tied into 12 month contract, have to pay for extra features that you thought were included so make sure you are fully aware of what you are getting.
Manchester Health Club Secret #4: Most members are the same year after year.
If you have ever spent a bit of time in a gym or health club then you should have noticed that almost every person who is trying to lose weight is the same year after year. No help or support is offered during the course of their membership, you get handed a plastic membership card and thats it. Nobody is getting real results and the health club does not care one bit. If you are a member of any programme, whether that be a personal training programme, a gym membership, a nutrition and health eating programme or a fitness class then you should be checked on with regular reviews of your goals to help you keep on top of it. Many people don’t bother going to train after a couple of weeks but then even those that do never achieve any real results.
Manchester Health Club Secret #5: Do you know what you are doing?.
Do have a training programme that you stick to when you go to workout or do you walk through the doors and make it up or just jump on random machines and copy what other people are doing? Well, I can say that from observing people over the years that around 90% of people in the gym do not have a clue what they are doing. They are making a lot of mistakes including using the machines wrong, performing an incorrect technique, picking a weight that is too heavy or too light, doing the wrong amount of repetitions, sometimes doing the same session all year round.
Serious note: Think about this for a minute…
If you had a tooth ache would you try to take your tooth out yourself or go to a dentist?
If you had to have your appendix removed would you go ahead and try that yourself or go to a surgeon?
If you were seriously ill would you diagnose it yourself and guess at the correct medication or go to the doctors?
I know most people (sensible people) would choose the professional option every time, so you should do the same with your fitness. You should not be designing your own fitness programmes and nutrition programmes unless you are reading this as a fitness professional yourself. This is one of the main reasons people get no results because of the lack of knowledge. I am not saying this is a bad thing it is just that fitness professionals have studied to gain this knowledge. There is no point studying for years just to write your own exercise programme so you should be on a professionally designed programme. Even many personal trainers do not have a clue as you can become a ‘personal trainer’ in a matter of months on a course. Even many trainers do not have a clue about what they are doing, it just so happens that they are naturally gifted in the fitness department and any old training they do will work for them, but not for their typical clients. Now, I am not saying I am against personal training, just be careful when you choose one.
